This document provides a 6-step graphical method for estimating the capacity of heavy equipment buckets. The key steps are: 1) tracing the bucket outline, 2) defining the load cross-section by constructing a "heap" area on top of the bucket contents, 3) drawing a grid over the load area, 4) counting the number of whole grid squares covered, 5) grouping partial squares, and 6) calculating volume by multiplying the cross-sectional area by the bucket length. The result provides an approximation of a bucket's rated capacity that considers the amount of material inside and piled on top.
