The Dangers of Fiberglass

What is Fiberglass?

Fiberglass is a silicate fiber made from very fine strands of glass. When fiberglass is chopped, cut, sanded, or otherwise manipulated, it produces particles containing microscopic fibers. Studies have shown that inhaling airborne particles of these fibers can reduce lung function and cause inflammation, asthma, and other health issues.

Fiberglass emits a synthetic material called styrene, which is a possible human carcinogen. OSHA has set a permissible exposure limit of 15 mg per cubic meter for non-respirable fibers and 5 mg per cubic meter for respirable fibers. The National Toxicology Program defines respirable fibers as fibers that can penetrate the alveolar region of the lung if they are inhaled.

Fiberglass Dust Collection Options

Air Purification, Inc. can provide OSHA/NFPA compliant synthetic dust collectors to contain hazardous fiberglass dust in your factory. We offer two main types of filtration systems to help with fiberglass dust collection, which are:

  • HEPA (high-efficiency particulate air) Filtration: This is a commonly used filtration system composed of numerous layers in which air is run through, progressively filtering out smaller particles until the air being blown out is nearly free of any contaminants. These systems are typically used for full rooms/larger areas.
  • Cartridge Filtration: Designed for smaller spaces than HEPA filters, these cartridges are more easily replaceable and cost less. They effectively collect dust in necessary areas.

Our knowledgeable team will gladly assist you along the journey, from helping you decide which filtration system will be best for you to designing custom systems if necessary, assisting with any issues, and handling your safety and concerns as our own.
