I got these strips because I was concerned a family member was hiding their drinking. I did a test last night on him and it came back positive. But the person in question had taken an herbal tincture with alcohol in it and claimed that was the cause. I wasn't sure whether to believe him so I took the same amount of tincture, waited the same amount of time, and did the test myself which came back negative (and I weigh much less). I worried all day that he was lying. Just to see if there was some kind of metabolic difference between the two of us, I had the person drink the tincture again today, I waited an hour and gave him the test. The first one came up negative, but when I put alcohol directly on it, it turned only very faintly blue as if the test wasn't working correctly. I gave him a second test and it instantly turned blue. Not knowing which test to trust I gave him two more - one again tested negative and the other again came back blue. The strips - or the quality control in the production of them - are clearly problematic. They don't produce reliable - and reproducible - results and appear to produce false negatives. My experience suggests these strips cannot be trusted if you are trying to monitor someone's alcohol use.
