Evaluating My Alibaba Rooftop Tent Purchase - Do I Recommend It?
Whenever you spot a custom overland SUV, whether it's a 4Runner, Jeep, or even a new Bronco, chances are it'll be equipped with a rooftop tent (RTT). Owners typically invest substantial amounts in both the tent and its delivery. Many who don't already have an RTT are likely saving up, considering the hefty price tags of popular brands.
Personally, I always aspired to own an RTT but found mainstream options too expensive. As someone early in my career, splurging thousands of dollars was simply out of reach.

Wondering why more people don't source RTTs directly from Alibaba if it's cheaper? Simply put, the process can be challenging. Alibaba facilitates direct B2B transactions, often connecting buyers directly with manufacturers. Specialized rooftop tent websites usually order their stock the same way. The manufacturer and buyer negotiate the product's cost per unit, finalize a deal, and process payments.
While ordering may seem straightforward, logistics can be complex. Getting your tent from a Chinese manufacturer to your home in the U.S. involves several steps.
Why Choose Alibaba?
After extensive research, I decided that the RoofNest Condor was the perfect RTT for me. However, its $3400 price tag (excluding tax and shipping) was prohibitive. I wasn't willing to spend more on a tent than I had on key components of my SUV.
In a moment of desperation, I searched for a used hardshell rooftop tent online and encountered Alibaba ads. I found what looked exactly like the RoofNest Condor for just $800, made in the same Chinese province as RoofNest's manufacturer. It appeared to be a golden opportunity.
The Purchase Journey
Once you finalize details with the manufacturer, you'll need a DDP (Delivered Duty Paid) Freight Forwarder to get the tent delivered from China to your doorstep, handling customs and all associated fees.
Expect multiple quotes from different freight forwarders. After wiring the payment, prepare for a lengthy wait. The entire process took me about two months, including shipping delays due to COVID-19.
