Whenever you spot a custom overland SUV, whether it's a 4Runner, Jeep, or even a new Bronco, chances are it'll be equipped with a rooftop tent (RTT). Owners typically invest substantial amounts in both the tent and its delivery. Many who don't already have an RTT are likely saving up, considering the hefty price tags of popular brands.
Personally, I always aspired to own an RTT but found mainstream options too expensive. As someone early in my career, splurging thousands of dollars was simply out of reach.
Wondering why more people don't source RTTs directly from Alibaba if it's cheaper? Simply put, the process can be challenging. Alibaba facilitates direct B2B transactions, often connecting buyers directly with manufacturers. Specialized rooftop tent websites usually order their stock the same way. The manufacturer and buyer negotiate the product's cost per unit, finalize a deal, and process payments.
While ordering may seem straightforward, logistics can be complex. Getting your tent from a Chinese manufacturer to your home in the U.S. involves several steps.
After extensive research, I decided that the RoofNest Condor was the perfect RTT for me. However, its $3400 price tag (excluding tax and shipping) was prohibitive. I wasn't willing to spend more on a tent than I had on key components of my SUV.
In a moment of desperation, I searched for a used hardshell rooftop tent online and encountered Alibaba ads. I found what looked exactly like the RoofNest Condor for just $800, made in the same Chinese province as RoofNest's manufacturer. It appeared to be a golden opportunity.
Once you finalize details with the manufacturer, you'll need a DDP (Delivered Duty Paid) Freight Forwarder to get the tent delivered from China to your doorstep, handling customs and all associated fees.
Expect multiple quotes from different freight forwarders. After wiring the payment, prepare for a lengthy wait. The entire process took me about two months, including shipping delays due to COVID-19.
Was the effort worth it? Absolutely! I secured a high-quality tent for $2000 less than mainstream brands by being patient and doing my homework. Now, I enjoy quick set-ups and comfortable nights on my rooftop tent, much to the envy of my friends.

If you haven’t already had the pleasure, I write a column called the Awesomely Weird Alibaba Electric Vehicle of the Week. Each week, I explore unique and affordable offerings from Alibaba's electric vehicle catalog, sharing my findings with readers. Recently, an Electrek reader shared his journey of purchasing a $1,700 electric mini-Jeep I previously highlighted.
This isn't a toy; it accommodates two adults comfortably and reaches speeds of 25 mph (40 km/h), making it a cost-effective alternative to U.S. golf carts priced around $7,000. Though listed at $1,280, shipping to a U.S. port brought the total closer to $1,700.

Electrek reader Kyle Day shared his Alibaba purchase process, which included navigating importation, customs, and assembly challenges.
Read on for my interview with Kyle, experiencing his process vicariously:
Micah: Why did you decide to purchase the electric mini-Jeep from Alibaba?
Kyle: I'd never used Alibaba before but was intrigued by your feature on the mini-Jeep. It seemed perfect for family camping trips, offering a fun, electric off-road vehicle for my kids. It's ideal for children too big for traditional toys but not ready for gas-powered ATVs.
Micah: How did you communicate with the seller and customize the Jeep?
Kyle: Using the Alibaba app, I connected with the seller, Alan. Despite translation barriers, I understood enough to customize my order with options like leather seats, a larger battery, and a winch.
Micah: What were the total costs, and were there any surprises?
Kyle: The final cost was roughly $3,000, including shipping and customs fees. The unit faced an additional 25% tariff, significantly adding to the cost.
Micah: Was customs clearance straightforward?
Kyle: Using the recommended customs broker made the process simpler, albeit not cheap. I then picked up the vehicle from a depot in Los Angeles.
Micah: How challenging was the assembly?
Kyle: Assembly was complex with no instructions provided. I had to align mount points and fix issues like a bent wheel hub using a welder. It was a hands-on task.
The mini-Jeep performs admirably within its intended use, though its range falls short of the advertised 48 miles. Overall, it met our needs, and everyone enjoys it.
Kyle's experience highlights the intricacies and rewards of importing an Alibaba electric vehicle. While assembly required substantial DIY skills, the shipping costs were relatively low. Prospective buyers should prepare for potential assembly challenges.
