Freightliner offers four severe-duty models that make great dump trucks, but the one that stands out is the 114SD Plus. In this lineup, the 114SD Plus has the second highest horsepower range (260-525 hp) and the second highest torque (1,850 lb-ft). It has a gross vehicle weight rating (GVWR) of 92,000 pounds. Freightliner refers to the truck as “the workhorse of the Freightliner severe-duty lineup”. 

The standard Detroit DD13 Gen 5 engine is new to the 114SD Plus, while the available Detroit DT12-V transmission provides easy control and smooth pneumatic shifting and clutch engagement. These other features are also included: Power Launch, Hill Start Aid, Off-Road Mode, Rock-Free Mode, Creep Mode, and Paver Mode. Detroit Assurance Active Brake Assist helps mitigate potential collisions by automatically engaging warnings, and partial or full braking. Detroit Assurance Side Guard Assist alerts the driver about objects and pedestrians in the truck’s passenger-side blind spot.

International HX 620

For International, the HX 620 is the largest severe-duty truck in the manufacturer’s lineup. The model features a 475 hp International A26 engine and a 6-speed Allison transmission. Its GVWR (80,000 pounds) is lower than the Freightliner 114SD Plus. Visibility is improved due to its sloped hood, one-piece wraparound windshield, and freshly designed and placed side mirrors. Wide-track Meritor axles and an up to a 40-degree wheel cut, result in a tighter turning radius for better job site maneuverability. Roll stability control and dual steering gears to match on and off-highway conditions reduce steering effort on all types of terrain, regardless of load.

Command Steer on the Mack Granite combines ergonomics and electronic-assist technology to reduce driver effort up to 85 percent. It can also reduce muscular strain by up to 30 percent. The system works by monitoring road variations at nearly 2,000 times per second to help maintain directional stability on rough roads and in high winds. During parking, reversing, and other low-speed maneuvers, the steering wheel automatically returns to zero. When steering and/or braking, Command Steer keeps the steering wheel steady to reduce unwanted steering changes. 

Peterbilt 367

The 367 is a rugged truck designed for heavy-duty vocational jobs, such as a dump truck. It features a lightweight PACCAR MX engine capable of producing up to 510 hp and a PACCAR 12-speed transmission. This transmission provides smoother shifting and nearly effortless heavy-duty hauling by integrating advanced designs and features. The transmission also requires significantly less oil compared to other automated types, and has the longest transmission oil change interval for linehaul applications – 750,000 miles. With 1,850 lb-ft. of torque, this transmission is the lightest, heavy-duty, automated transmission available on the market, according to the company. 

Smart features for this dump truck model include SmartNav, which offers precise GPS positioning and real-time road monitoring, and SmartLinq remote diagnostics, so technicians can diagnose problems at the shop while the truck is on the road. 

Volvo VHD 300

The Volvo VHD 300 in axle back (AB) configuration is ideal for applications that require an extremely tight turning radius and serious off-highway capability—both of which are often useful in dump applications. The truck can be spec’d with any VHD family frame length option, including 6×4 tandem, 8×4 tandem, and 8×6 tri-drive. The VHD 300 features the fuel-efficient and lightweight Volvo D11 engine, providing a horsepower range of 325-425 hp and 1,550 lb-ft. torque. The I shift with crawler gears allow for travel at 0.6 mph, which is great when the dumped material needs to be metered out across a larger area. With low and ultra-low gears, the driver can take their foot off the brake and their mind off their speed. 

Also helpful, the Volvo Dynamic Steering adds torque to reduce steering strain on the driver’s arms, shoulders, and neck, when operating at low speeds. The VHD now comes available with the next generation VADA (Volvo Active Driver Assist) technology, which integrates radar and camera technologies for constant monitoring of the area in front of the truck.

Western Star 4900

The Western Star 4900 has three engine options—Detroit DD15 (14.8 liters, 455 hp-505 hp, 1,550-1,750 lb-ft.), Detroit DD16 (15.6 liters, 500 hp-600 hp, 1,850-2,050 lb-ft.), and Cummins X15 (5.0 liters, 450 hp-605 hp, 1,450-2,050 lb-ft.). And there are several transmission options—Eaton Fuller FR-13210B (10-, 13-, 15- and 18-speed) and Eaton Fuller UltraShift PLUS. 

You can spec up to triple-frame rails for hauling the heaviest loads and the truck is rugged enough to handle them, even while traveling on rough terrain. Outboard cab mounts are placed as wide as possible to maximize lateral stability and provide a more comfortable ride. The spacious all-steel cab is precision-welded for strength, then is treated to a 12-stage e-coat process, which provides long-lasting corrosion resistance and a better paint finish. Other durable features include shot-peened frame rails, a heavy-duty, end-of-frame crossmember to minimize trailer damage, and a heavy-duty hood pivot option to resist twisting and contribute to longer component life, reducing repairs and downtime.
