If it ain't broke...fix it anyways...that's why you told your wife you needed all those tools.

What are the differences between an MT-1 and a MT-2 ...

Post by buck
I have a lathe that takes MT-1 spur center and MT-1 live center. Seeing
that I don't know much about lathes, what would happen if I put a MT-2 spur
drive into the MT-1 spindle? Would it fit? Would it fall out? Is there a
visual difference between the MT1 and the MT2? Can they be mistakenly
interchanged? I know they have different taper dimensions but how do you
know what you have without a mic or label?

MT1 and MT2 are two different sizes of tooling. There are sleeves that can be
interposed to use the two together, but usually you'd be trying to use a
smaller MT male- shanked device with a larger MT female (inside) bore
(headstock or tailstock). Since your lathe is MT1 on both ends (both bores),
it would be extremely unusual to mount MT2 tooling on your lathe. It would be
by what are termed extension sleeves--MT1 (male) external taper to MT2 internal
(female) taper. These to exist, but their use on your lathe would make no
sense--small capacity lathe doing large capacity lathe work.
